The furnace should be inspected yearly by a qualified service technician

Furnace filters should be replaced every two months, or as required
Check/Inspect furnace drainage system for blockages and/or leaks
Check/Inspect furnace venting system for blockages and/or leaks
Check furnace intake and exhaust pipes on the exterior of the home regularly to ensure they are free of obstruction (snow and ice during the winter). (see video guide for clearing vents)
