Choosing a Furnace

Furnace Efficiency

Whatever new furnace you choose will most likely be far more efficient than the one you’re replacing. Today the minimum efficiency for a furnace in Canada is 92% AFUE while the highest rated furnaces have a 95-98% AFUE rating.

Understanding AFUE Rating

A furnace with an AFUE Rating of 92% simply means that 92% of the fuel will be converted to useable heat with 8% waste during the heating process.

If you plan to keep your home for 5-10 years we recommend an Energy Star certified furnace with an AFUE rating of 95% or more. An Energy Star certified furnace will cost a couple of hundred dollars more but the purchase price will be offset over the years with the money you’ll save on energy consumption.

Best Furnace Brands

We sell and service most major brands of furnaces, which is important to you, because parts and service can easily be found should you ever need repairs.

It would fair to say all major manufacturers of furnaces make reliable and quality products with little to discern amongst them. We do recommend Goodman as they have excellent customer reviews, high-quality heat exchangers (a key component) and are very competitively priced.

Furnace Types

Single Stage Furnace

This type of furnace is the most inexpensive but does have some disadvantages. It is usually the furnace choice for budget-conscious consumer.

The furnace is either “on” or “off” (single stage). Compared to other types of furnaces the temperature is hard to get consistent throughout the home (it’s either hotter or colder than preferable) and the energy usage is higher, especially during colder months.

Dual Stage Furnace

This furnace has high and low settings. The first stage is low which will heat your home most of the year. The second stage is high output which is used during the coldest periods of winter. The cost, compared to a single stage furnace, is a little higher.

With 2 stages this furnace delivers better consistent temperatures in your home and allows for improved temperature control throughout the entire year. A dual stage furnace is also more quiet and its energy usage is lower than single stage furnaces.

Variable/Multi-Speed Furnace

Variable/Multi-Speed is in reference to the blower motor which is able to adjust its speed for the output of warm air sent throughout a home. Unlike single or dual stage furnaces its speed can vary depending on the requirement of the home.

Because the blower motor starts slowly, increasing its speed gradually, noise is greatly reduced. It can also continually circulate air (passing through filters) improving air quality - even when heat isn’t needed. A variable multi-speed furnace uses less electricity reducing energy consumption. The cost is higher than single stage and dual stage furnaces.

Modulating Furnaces

The burner on a modulating furnace is able to adjust automatically, in small increments, regulating the amount of fuel burned depending on the thermostat setting. Modulating furnaces come equipped with variable speed blowers.

Because the blower and burner rarely operate at full capacity these furnaces are very high-efficient. Modulating furnaces can deliver better temperature consistency in the home and are superior in controlling temperatures within the home. The purchase price for modulating furnaces are higher, but they can help greatly in reduced energy usage.

Important Considerations

Before having a furnace installed consider the following.

We understand you don’t want to pay more than you have to for a new furnace. Be careful when you come across an unbelievably low price and make sure you research to confirm the seller is established and reputable. If a heating system is installed improperly it will lose efficiency and succumb to breakdown - it may even void the manufacturers warranty.

Your furnace should be installed by HVAC experts who stand behind their product and its warranty. Furthermore to achieve maximum efficiency the furnace needs to be installed according to the manufacturers recommendations and be correctly sized for the square footage of the home.

Cost for Furnace Installation

The price for a new furnace installation may vary depending on a few factors including;

  • The size of the unit. A furnace too small or one that is oversized will not provide even temperatures throughout the home and will have shortened lifecycles among presenting a host of other issues
  • Updated safety codes may require upgrades to venting, piping and electrical wiring
  • Furnace features will increase the initial cost of the unit but in some cases the extra cost can be offset by the savings in reduced energy
  • Ductwork needs to be sealed and without leaks
